Funk was the scene of not only a brilliant social event but an intellectual treat rarely enjoyed in Danvers, the occasion being a “Welcome home" given in honor of the return of Mrs. F. J. Parkhurst after a European tour of some months. After the guests were assembled, Mrs. Parkhurst, in her inimitable way, gave an informal lecture on the places visited in the old world, delighting her audience with her graphic descriptions, splendid diction and thorough knowledge, both historical and legendary, connected with the places described. After the guests had partaken of the dainty collation served, they were given the pleasure of looking through the collection of fine illustrations which Mrs. Parkhurst had procured while abroad. The decorations throughout the home were in the national colors, American flags from the tiniest to those of enormous size were every where in evidence, while the dining room was a veritable bower of red, white and blue, the floral decorations being Jack roses. Mrs. Parkhurst, before begining her address, in a few well chosen words expressed her appreciation of the welcome accorded her, and paid graceful tribute to her native country, quoting the following lines: “There are many flags in many lands, There are flags of every hue, But there is no flag in any land, Like our own red, white and blue." This brought a burst of applause from her listeners. Among the out of town guests were Mrs. Chas. Vance of Peoria, Mrs. Wm. Foreman of Bloomington, Mrs. Harris of Arkansas, Miss Knapple of Nebraska.
